What Does Oud Smell Like? The Most Misunderstood Note in Perfumery

No note in perfumery divides people like oud. One person calls it the most luxurious smell on earth; the next says it
smells like a hospital bandage. Both are describing the same material.
Here's what oud actually smells like, why reactions vary so much, and how to work out whether you'll like it.
What oud is
Oud — also called agarwood, oudh or aloeswood — is a dark, resinous heartwood produced when an Aquilaria tree
responds to a specific mold infection. The tree floods the affected wood with fragrant resin as a defense. That
resin-saturated wood is oud.
It's rare, slow to form, and one of the most expensive raw materials in all of perfumery, sold by the gram. It has been
central to Middle Eastern, Indian and Southeast Asian perfumery for centuries.
What it smells like
Real oud is complex and shifts as it develops. The most common descriptors:
• Woody — dense, dark, dry, nothing like cedar or pine
• Smoky — like smoldering wood rather than campfire
• Leathery — tanned hide, slightly animal
• Sweet and balsamic — an underlying resinous sweetness
• Medicinal or phenolic — the quality people describe as antiseptic or bandage-like
• Animalic — in the strongest grades, genuinely barnyard-adjacent
A good oud fragrance moves through several of these over a few hours. The first ten minutes are usually the
harshest.
Why reactions vary so much
Three reasons.
Origin. Cambodian oud tends sweeter and fruitier. Indian oud is more animalic. Hindi oud is the most challenging for
unfamiliar noses. These are genuinely different smells sold under one word.
Familiarity. The phenolic, medicinal quality reads as "wrong" to a nose that hasn't encountered it before. With
repeated exposure the brain reclassifies it from antiseptic to rich. Almost everyone who loves oud disliked it initially.
Concentration. A trace of oud in a base adds depth nobody would identify as oud. A heavy dose is unmistakable.
Real oud vs oud accords
Almost every affordable oud fragrance uses a synthetic accord rather than natural oil. That isn't a downgrade. Modern
oud accords are cleaner, more consistent, more stable and far more wearable than raw agarwood for most people.
They also mean an oud fragrance can cost less than dinner.
Natural oud oil at meaningful concentration puts a bottle into the hundreds or thousands. If a bottle is affordable, it's
an accord — and that's fine.
The oud styles, easiest to hardest
How to wear oud
• Two sprays maximum. Oud is dense and it grows on skin.
• Give it twenty minutes. The opening is the harshest part; the dry-down is where it becomes beautiful.
• Spray clothing as well as skin. Fabric softens the opening and holds oud for days.
• Cold weather. Oud in humidity is overwhelming for everyone around you.
• Not in confined spaces. Planes, small offices, gyms. Yes to dinners, events and evenings.

Why is oud so expensive?
Only a small fraction of Aquilaria trees produce it, it takes years to form, and harvesting is destructive. Supply is
genuinely limited.
Does oud stain clothing?
Dark oud fragrances can mark light silk. Test an inconspicuous spot or spray the inside of a garment.
